Home -Profiles


Profile is a user state environment or user personal settings. User personal settings are:

  • Documents
  • Desktop settings
  • Start menu icons
  • Shortcuts
  • Application data
  • Downloads
  • Pictures ,music and videos
  • Contacts.
  • Favorites...etc.

We are using two types of profiles they are.

  • Local profiles
  • Roaming profiles

Local Profiles: A Local user profile is created by the first time when we logon to a computer and it’s stored in a computer local hard disk.

In windows 2000, xp, 2003 operating systems Default local profile location is "Documents and Settings". In Vista, windows-7, windows-8, 2008 and 2012 operating systems by default local profile location is "USERS".

We are using two types of profiles they are.

By using below steps to add or create local profiles:
  • On Domain control system open ADUC and create one user account with a name ex:RaviNambooriemc without password.
  • On client or member server system logon as a user name which is newly created(RaviNambooriemc) in Domain Control system
  • Create some file and folders on desktop.
Verify "profile type and status"
  • On Member server system or client server system Right click on the MY COMPUTER icon and select properties (Short cut-windows + Break)
  • In properties select advanced system settings.
  • Select user profile settings and verify “RaviNambooriemc” profile type and status.
  • It will show the profile details and status.

Roaming Profiles: A Roaming user profile is created by your System Administrator and its stored on a server.

These profiles are available every time you log on to any computer on the network. If any changes made in your Roaming Profile that will updated on the server.

Below steps using to apply "Roaming Profiles" to the user profiles
  • On Domain control system open drive and create a share folder with any name ex: Roam, for every one with Read and Write permissions.
  • Next open ADUC and Right click on “user Name”.
  • Select properties next select profile
  • Provide profile path -\\computer name\shared folder name\user profile.
  • Ex: \\sys1\\Roam\\RaviNambooriemc
  • Next click on ok button.
  • Logon to client system
  • Next create some files and folders on desktop next verify profile type and status.
  • Next logout from the system.
  • Next logon to Domain control system using user profile (RaviNambooriemc) and verify previously created files and folders if its available that profile added as a Roaming profile.

Home folder is a centralized location of the user's files (Data). Home folder makes it easier for an administrator to back up “user profiles” by collecting all users files in one location. In every system which are in Domain, Home Folder will be available in the form of "Network Drive" or "Network Location".

Below steps using to create Home Folder
  • Logon to Domain Control system.
  • Open Drive in My Computers.
  • Create a Folder with name of "HOME".
  • Share the folder to all users with Read and Write permissions
  • Next open "ADUC".
  • Right click on user Name.
  • Select properties.
  • Select profile.
  • Select connect.
  • Provide path like this \\sys1\HOME(shared folder name)\username.
  • Ex: \\sys1\HOME\RaviNambooriemc.
  • Next click on ok button.
  • Logon to member server system or client system with username.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Verify Network Drive “(HOME FOLDER).
  • Next open “Home Folder” and create some files and folders.
IMP : Only user files and Data in Home folder no Settings.
